With Interest Table: August 2012

After extending June's table through July, we resume the interest table project this month with a 'random interests' selection.

Little to no correlation is intended here, as objects have simply been plucked from various corners of the working environment of Studio 100. Once collected however, a circular theme seemed to have emerged, surrounded by consciously collected, reclaimed and recycled objects, begging perhaps the question: how random is random?

Arthur's Cafe paper bag
Arthur's Cafe provides the mainstay of food consumed at Studio 100 (where we're based). Established in 1935, the cafe is still run by Arthur himself. Nothing fancy, other than some of the bacon availability rules, Arthur's makes good honest freshly cut sandwiches alongside hot meals that your great gran and grandad would have been proud of. Their bag features on this months random interest table as a nod to the fact that they close for August. All of it. They say it's so they can have their holidays. We reckon it's to make us miss them desperately and realise we can't manage without them.

Vintage Lyons Fruitline Lollies jar fulled with collected toys
This is one of three jars from the shelf of graphic designer Jason Godfrey. Mostly the toys look to be free gifts form cereal boxes or cheap things that come with sweets in, or inside sweets for kids. Out of the jar we have…

Large rubber grasshopper, small rubber grasshopper, purple rubber evil looking man with cape and mask, Leoanardo Turtle ornament made in Twiwan 1990, designed by Mirage Studios USA (possibly once had sweets in), Blue plastic Mario ornament 1998 NOA still with sweets in (untasted), Kinder propeller plane, Batman head ornament still with sweets in (or 'candy' as it says) made in China 1998, Large rubber spider (brown), Two Homer Simpson miniature ornaments, Rubber snake, Assorted dice, Pink Bart Simpson with Santa's Little Helper ornament with sweets in, Yellow Marge and Maggie Simpson ornament with sweets in (both 1991), Instructional die (including such suggestions as Read, Pub, TV, Disco, Sex, Love, Plastic toy goat, Wind up walking Godzilla, Tiny plastic lion, Large rubber spider (black), Winner European B Championships Birmingham 1988 medal.

The Yoshimoto Cube No. 1
This is a crazy toy puzzle thing found in Tokyo Hands in Japan. The two cubes turn into stars and also fit perfectly together.

Collected Toilet Rolls
Every one of these rolls was left empty in one of the toilets at Studio 100. That is, a large shared studio space, 100% full of lovely and talented people, who have been asked via polite notice and email on a number of occasions not to leave empty rolls in the toilets. Documenting the oddity of so many nice people being unable to dispose of a single cardboard tube that they will have actually held in their hands, has become a bit of a anthropological OCD for Mathew. Some paranoia also exists however that the rolls are now being left deliberately just to wind him up.

Kee Klamp knuckles (various)
Much of Studio 100 shelving is built with Kee Klamp, which is like miniature scaffolding, or large Meccano depending on which you're more familiar with. Over time it's been replaced it with other furniture solutions, resulting in a huge surplus of knuckles and polls stored in the studio. If you know anyone looking for cheap Kee Klamp shelving therefore, tell them to get in touch.

Badge Cutter
Ian Wright has been based back at Studio 100 for some time now which is great. Great because he brings a character and vibe to the studio that no one else can. A teacher and influencer of some of the UK's greatest designers, illustrator and artists, this is the badge cutter responsible for tons of well known work (as well as lesser know novelty badges).

Fluoro Tape
This sort of tape, like Keep Klamp, has been a signature of Studio 100 residents for many years. This roll is owned by Jason Godfrey.

Miscellaneous ceramic W
No one has any idea where this came from, but it's been on our shelf for years. Always makes us consider a serif logotype, before we get too scared and stick with sans. Safe, safe sans.

Camera Sniper filter
This is a lens filter of the Camera Sniper camera that was added to the June interest table, a camera that was basically responsible for the June table being extended through July. Everyone loves cameras and so who could resist one that looks like a gun! No one it seemed.

Large reclaimed metal signage S
Graphic Designer Dan Adams has a veritable fort of wonders at Studio 100. Design books and objects surround his working space, and this large metal S sits just outside in it in the walkway and serves as a constant reminder that there's something irresistible about large 3D pieces of typography (especially when it's reclaimed and a bit rusty).

Nature jug
The workspace of artist Louise O'Riley is another effective interest table in itself. In order to share a little of her wonders we've borrowed this jug of miscellaneous twigs and things (one in fact being the very lichen covered twig that was illustrated to represent Mathew in her 2011 With Associates Fields Notes piece).

Aloevera
There are three of these that live on the main communal lunch table. Green fingered godess Chloe is currently nurturing them back to health after they appear to have fallen slightly on harder times.

Looks as if it was written by someone holding a felt tip pen while having electric shock therapy. I like the hair-do on the left of shot.
