"Exterior design is the process of shaping the experience of exterior space, through the manipulation of spatial volume as well as surface treatment. Exterior Design draws on aspects of environmental psychology, architecture, product design and furniture design in addition to traditional decoration. An exterior designer is a person who is considered an expert in the field of exterior design or one who designs exteriors as part of their job. Exterior design is a creative practice that analyzes programmatic information, establishes a conceptual direction, refines the design direction, and produces graphic communication and construction documents. In some jurisdictions, exterior designers must be licensed to practice." - Wikipedia

1964 British edition of "Notes of a Native Son" by James Baldwin

This book should be on everyone's reading list. First published in 1949, this is a 1964 British edition with cover image by Charles Gorham. A contemporary equivalent might be Shepard Fairley's famous campaign poster of Barack Obama.

There are many passages worth quoting, but keeping with the Obama theme:

"The terrible thing about being a Negro leader lies in the term itself. I do not mean merely the somewhat condescending differentiation the term implies, but the nicely refined torture a man can experience from having been created and defeated by the same circumstances. That is, Negro leaders have been created by the American scene, which thereafter works against them at every point; and the best that they can hope for is ultimately to work themselves out of their jobs, to nag contemporary American leaders and the members of their own group until a bad situation becomes so complicated and so bad that it cannot be endured any longer. It is like needling a blister until it bursts. On the other hand, one cannot help observing that some Negro leaders and politicians are far more concerned with their careers than with the welfare of the Negroes, and their dramatic and publicised battles are battles with the wind. Again, the phenomenon cannot be changed without a change in the American scene. In a land where, it is said, any citizen can grow up and become President, Negroes can be pardoned for desiring to enter Congress."

The American scene has changed. Obama became President. Halleluja.
